The city of Carlisle is the largest of all settlements that you will find in Cumbria, England. Along with being the administrative centre for the city and the County of Cumbria, it also houses the main campus for the University of Cumbria. A vacation in Carlise is ideal for anyone who wants to find out more about this ancient city.

Actually getting to Carlisle could not be any easier. The main roads that links this city with not only the Southern part of England but also to Scotland are the M6 (for the South) and M74/A74 (takes you towards Glasgow and the Northern part of England). Especially in the busy morning and evening rush hours, it may pay you to leave the car at your hotel.

If you do not intend driving to the city then there are regular train services that come directly in to its railway station. Trains not only arrive from London, but also from Newcastle, Leeds and Glasgow. However, the train that comes from Glasgow does come via the town of Dumfries.

When you actually arrive in the city for your vacation, there is plenty of things for one to do and see whilst staying there. One of the main attractions of Carlisle is the historic cathedral.

Since it was built over nine hundred years ago, the castle has marked the western edge of the city and is close to the border between England and Scotland. It has witnessed many conflicts and even been subject to the occasional siege. Today, these are but memories as you tour the dungeons, stairways and chambers. The legendary “Licking Stones” can be found in the dungeons. Legend has it that Jacobite prisoners were so thirsty that they would lick the stones in an effort to get some water to help keep them alive.

As for the Cathedral this was founded in 1122 and remains a dominate feature of the city’s skyline when you look from anywhere across the city. Not only is beautifully decorated but a visit down into the crypt and you will find a display which looks at more than a 1,000 years of Christian history relating to the county of Cumbria.

For those looking to liven up their visit to Carlisle, you should time your trip to coincide with one of the regular race meetings. The racecourse is located on the outskirts of the town and is set in beautiful countryside and this is why the course undulates somewhat. Throughout the year top quality horse racing events take place with the National Hunt ones taking place between September and April and the flat races taking place between April and August.

Carlisle vacations are ideal for those who are looking for a quiet romantic time away with their partner. But they are also the place for families who are looking for a little adventure and fun during their Carlisle holiday.

England is an incredibly interesting nation in which to spend a vacation. England has a great many visitor attractions well worth a visit perfect for all tastes. For instance|One such place is the ancient city of York which is known to have been inhabited since the days of the Romans, Torquay (often called the English Riviera) and Liverpool (European City of Culture 2008). One of the most famous, and interesting, places to spend some time in is London the capital city of the UK

London is an amazing city to visit, maybe for just a weekend or, possibly for longer. You would be surprised at how many folk living in the United Kingdom who have not yet visited London, even more surprising when you consider the fact it is most often top of the vast majority of visitors lists (of the most enjoyable places they went to).

There simply so many things to do and see in London that it is not possible to recall them all all in one go. Surprisingly one of the newest attractions in London also happens to be one of the most popular - The London Eye. Another popular attraction nearby to the London Eye is Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. However, one place which must not be missed is Buckingham Palace.

Buckingham Palace is England’s most well known Royal residence, being home to Queen Elizabeth. Buckingham Palace is to be found right at the very heart of London which makes it a natural focus for visitors. The daily pageant of ‘Changing of the Guard’ is incredibly fascinating to watch and ever so English.

Buckingham Palace was originally called Buckingham House. It was originally a large townhouse, constructed in 1703 for the Duke of Buckingham. It is actually the townhouse that forms the main core of the palace as we are familiar with today.

Throughout the next 75 years Buckingham House was made larger by the building of 3 wings creating a central courtyard. The primary architects responsible for these additions were John Nash and Edward Blore. John Nash was also responsible for the interior design of the monumental staterooms.

The widely known architect Aston Webb was responsible for the construction of the principal facade of Buckingham Palace which, in 1912, he re-designed. Webb along with the sculptor Sir Thomas Brock were the winners of a competition to design a memorial to Queen Victoria. This memorial is still standing today.

The Queen has various other royal residences other than Buckingham Palace. Every year the Queen spends the Christmas season at Sandringham House in Norfolk. Sandringham House is actually privately owned by the Queen (classed as a private royal residence.

Another private residence is Balmoral Castle, in Royal Aberdeenshire in Scotland. The Queen was in residence at Balmoral Castle when she was informed about the shocking death of Diana, Princess of Wales.

If you would like to take a break in the U.K. you might be surprised to hear that it is possible to find cheap hotels in London without any great effort, on the other hand you may want to stay in more luxurious surroundings and the fine selection of boutique hotels in London should be more than satisfactory.

Paris the French capital, is one of Europe’s perennially popular destinations and has some of the biggest name attractions of any European city.

Whether your ideal lodgings in Paris are a central Paris hotel choose something memorable for your stay.

Choose the neighbourhood that works best for your trip. Arty Montmatre, the laid-back left bank or something further out on the Metro line they all have their advantages. A boutique Paris hotel all offer something - decide what is important to you before making a booking.

Here are some suggested highlights for a first time visitor to Paris. The extensive, reliable and cheap metro makes it easy to get around Paris regardless of where you are staying
Remember to hold onto your wallet tight, especially when the hoards descend on you trying to sell the usual tourist junk at popular locations such as the Eiffel Tower or the Louvre|Notre Dame Cathedral.

River Seine
The River Seine is an excellent place to start your Paris break. From the Seine you can take in the heart of the ancient city of Paris and provides easy access to many of Paris’s most famous attractions.

Champs-Elysees
Although an attraction in itself, the long and wide Champs-Elysees boulevard is often a pleasant departure from the more built up areas of the city. Tourists are unlikely to find a cheap Paris hostel along here, however. However the many luxury 5 star hotels are nearby.

At one end of the Champs-Elysees is the Arc de Triomphe: one of the city’s must-sees, honoring the soldiers that fought in France’s wars. It can also be an amusing place to watch cars carefully navigating the bizarre Charles de Gaulle roundabout (nicknamed L’Etoile, or star), a scary piece of road engineering even in Paris. As a predestrian avoid death and take the underpass.

Colchester is the largest of all the settlements in the County of Essex in England. The town actually claims to be the oldest one in Britain and is certainly the oldest recorded Roman town in England. Due to its long history, there are plenty of Colchester attractions, which one can enjoy whilst visiting the town. Here, we’ll take a look at some that should be on your shortlist when you stay in Colchester.

1. Balkerne Gate – This is the most complete Roman gateway you will find in Britain and is believed to have been built at around 55AD. It was originally actually the main way that visitors would enter the town but over time was then transformed into a triumphal arch instead. Then after this, it became part of the town’s new walls then in 465 AD it got blocked up to help improve the town’s defence system. It was rediscovered about a hundred years ago and this is why it has remained in such good condition that you see today.

2. Charter Market – The oldest recorded market in the United Kingdom has been run here for more than 800 years now. The market was granted a Royal Charter in 1189 by King John and is where it gets its name from. Today markets are still held here on a Friday and a Saturday and there is a wide variety of things to choose from as the charter prevents more than one stall selling the same item.

3. Colchester Castle – This Norman castle is built on the foundations of what was the Roman Temple to Claudius. But, the temple was destroyed in 60AD as part of Queen Boudica’s campaign to force the Romans to leave Britain. The Normans re-used the stone to build the castle which means the fabric of the building dates back to the Romans.

The castle boasts one of the largest and oldest castle keeps to be built in Europe and within the castles walls there is much to do and see. There are a number of exhibitions in the castle, tracing more than two thousand years of British history and there are interactive displays to keep your youngsters busy. While you look around the castle you can learn more about Matthew Hopkins the Witch finder General who used it as a jail at the times that the trials were taking place.

4. Colchester Zoo – One of Europe’s finest zoos and is only a short drive from the town itself. Located in around sixty acres of English countryside the zoo is home to over two hundred different species for you to look at. Along with elephants in Elephant Kingdom, there are the chimpanzees in Chimp World to enjoy. Plus you will find other parts of the zoo just as enthralling. As with any zoo, you’ll almost certainly find yourself spending lots of time here.

Check out this list of Colchester accommodation for your next visit.

Students heave a sigh of relief and are very happy when the final examinations are over and the vacation begins. A heavy load of studies leaves them practically little or no time to play or pursue the activities of their interests. All the while they are engaged in some mental activity of one type or the other.

But then they are faced with the problem: ‘What should 1 do in the vacation?’ One thing is very clear. Students should not be burdened with any form of studies during the holidays. They should say good-bye to their books of studies and utilise the entire vacation in pursuing other activities. The nature of these activities would depend upon the surroundings in which a student lives, the facilities available to him and the student’s own aptitude and interests. Whatever be the activities pursued, they should invariably contribute to his physical development, and equip him to live a better life as a useful member of society. They should be voluntary, chosen by the student himself and should provide him the most needed diversion, rest and recreation.

A number of such activities may be suggested. First come games-both indoor and outdoor but preferably outdoor. Games like cricket, football, volleyball, badminton, hockey and table tennis as well as Indian games provide recreation with physical exercise. Swimming, bicycle-riding, horse-riding and trekking form another group of activities which provide rigorous physical exercise along with recreation.

Some time may be devoted daily to acquiring some skills like handling a computer, typewriting, shorthand, public speaking, cooking, tailoring, washing, wiring, carpentry or some repair work. Vacation is the best period for pursuing hobbies like reading, writing, music, dancing, painting, stamp-collection, photography, gardening, etc. These hobbies provide necessary diversion from the mental work and are excellent sources of relaxation, recreation, fun and useful knowledge.

For those who want some social activities there are activities like trips and excursions, sports competitions and staging of dramas. Students may offer their services to hospitals, public libraries or the Red Cross. If a student wants to earn as well as to learn, he may take up a part-time vacation job in some store or bank or such other institution.

They will feel fit and ready to pursue their study with renewed vigour when the school or the college reopens after the vacation.

Peterborough has good transport links with the local area, so it makes a good base to use for any explorations you plan. The cathedral was originally built in 655AD, although the current building is newer at "only" almost 900 years old. Although the cathedral wasn't chosen as one of the locations for the Harry Potter movies, its gothic architecture would fit well into the scenes in the movie.

Evenings in the city can be livened up by the local music scene, which caters for everything from the usual pub and club discos, through to acoustic and electric sessions from local bands. Some venues offer the opportunity of an "unplugged" session, so you can enjoy a peaceful time. You should be able to find local bands playing somewhere in the city most every night.

Check the program in Peterborough in case one of the various popular events such as the Campaign for Real Ale's beer festival are taking place. If this is the case, make sure you book your accommodation ahead. The city is also the site for the annual East of England Show. If your stay in Peterborough is at the same time as these events, be certain to book your accommodation in good time.

There are a myriad of places to dine out in Peterborough. There are Italian, Chinese and Indian restaurants aplenty. Polish restaurants have also sprung up in and around Peterbough.

Spring and summer in the city feature regattas and the chilly month of February sees a river race on the river Nene.

More energetic visitors could take part in the Great Eastern Run. Over three thousand runners attempt this half marathon through the city's streets, watched by even more spectators.

Whatever your reason for staying in Peterborough, you’re bound to find a warm welcome in one of Peterborough’s hotels and guest houses.

Italy is a very popular travel destination for many visitors. Here are some quick Italy travel tips

Tips for Italy

The most popular tourist season is June through September: aim for May or October and you will enjoy smaller crowds and still have good weather.

Bring as little as possible. One small bag that you can easy carry yourself on and off planes, trains and up and down stairs will give you a lot more freedom. Don’t expect every hotel to have an elevator - they don’t.

Most long-haul flights arrive in Rome or Milan and these gateways will give you the best selection of discount flights. You may get a better over-all cost looking for a cheap flight into London or Amsterdam and then connecting on to Italy using a local European budget airline such as EasyJet or Ryan Air.

If you do use a low cost airline check how far out of town the airport they are using is and how much it will cost you to get back into town. Few of the cheaper airports will be as convenient as Rome’s Fumcino airport where you can catch the Leonardo Express train to Rome’s Termini Station for Euro11

Don’t worry about not speaking Italian - if you speak French or Spanish you won’t have a lot of problem. Even if you don’t patience, acting, sign language and a sense of humor will get you a long way.

Train Travel. If you are going to use the Eurail pass for discounted train travel within Europe you need to purchase your pass before leaving home. Do you figures carefully though, many of the passes are not good value unless you are traveling from one end of Europe to the other. Also if you are over 26 you will have to travel first class on an Eurail pass while second class is comfortable and available for tickets bought in Italy.

Italy has a fairly low rate of crime. Be careful of pickpockets in major cities but there is probably less violent crime than in your home town. Be aware of your surroundings in large train stations and popular tourist sites. The Romans never carry a bag slung over a shoulder but hung diagonally across the body - and you should too.

Enjoy your Italian vacation: hopefully these Italy vacation tips have helped

You can’t afford a luxury trip to Paris? Reconsider, read on for tricks on how to get a luxury vacation for a three star price.

The single most important thing for a cost-effective vacation is pick you time. Times to avoid in Paris: Christmas, September/October when there are large trade shows. Want a luxury hotel? Rates may well be cheaper at the end of the week an particularly during the summer months.

Try to time your departure so that you leave late at night having had a full day in Paris: your hotel will hold your luggage even if you have to check out in the morning. You have now got an extra day in Paris, and no hotel bill! Sleep on the plane its the best thing to do on them.

Don’t go alone: preferably take a couple of friends and share a room: you will normally pay the same for two adults as one and the third person is much less than half the tarrif for two.

Don’t hire a car . You do not need a car in Paris; the central city is compact and walkable and the Metro will get you around faster than a taxi in rush hour. If you are hiring an auto for the remainder of your vacation, arrange it so that your hire period begins as you say au revoir to Paris.

Use the internet to find the best deals on hotels. Don’t just book with the first site you find though. Try five or six especially if you are looking for smaller, boutique hotels. Not every hotel is on every travel website portal.

Beware that a lot of museums and art galleries are shut one day a week: normally Monday or Tuesday. If you are in town for those two days then double check which days your “must see” sites are open to avoid disappointment.

Don’t use taxis to hop around town: use the Metro for longer trips or walk: Paris is one of the most walkable cities in the world and most of the major sights and shopping areas are within easy walking distance.

A new development in inner city transport is the Vélib program (”vélo Liberté” or Freedom Bikes) by which it is possible to rent a bike for a very modest price. The first 30 minutes is free (plus a Euro1 daily fee payable by credit card) and prices rise raipidly for longer rental: designed to encourage you to drop off the bike and pick up a new one as you require: what a great reason to stop at cafe or two…

Paris is a wonderful city and who doesn’t want to see the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the Musse d’Orsay, Notre Dame Church. Make sure you make the effort to make it to top stared restaraunt at least once on your visit.

Choose a Paris Luxury Hotel for your next European vacation and really see a different side of that wonderful city. A central Paris hotel will help you spend most of your time in the city of romance not commuting from a remote suburb. Selecting the best Parisian hotel can make or break your vacation.

How much to tip in Medan

Before we get into tipping, you may want to know the value of your money in Medan Indonesia, no not just the exchange rates.

Minimum Wage in Medan
This is just rough indication to the value of money and tips in Medan. The standard minimum wage in Medan is about Rp980.000 a month which is around Rp38.000 (USD 4.00 ) a day. Some smaller shop and service industry even pays lower than minimum pay like Rp500.000 / month. So you can measure how much your tips are worth.

There are many times, tourists are the victims of extortion in Indonesia, hence, takes extra precaution. The amount of Rp 50.000 is a big sum as tips in Indonesia, hence do not fall into the trap.

Tipping at Restaurants & Hotels
Many restaurants and Hotels inn Medan have the standard 10% service charge plus tax directly charged to your bill. So technically, you are not required to give any extra.
Nevertheless, if you are feeling well served and generous, you may want to give extra tips to the waiters or waitresses.
There are no hard and fast rules on how much to tip in Medan compared to USA where 25% of your bill is expected.

For restaurants, the standard tipping is around Rp 5.000 to Rp 10.000. You may give more if you bring more guests. Rp20.000 should be a big tip.
Hotel porters and bellboys, probably the same aroung Rp5.000 to Rp10.000 depending on the amount of luggages you have for them to help you with.

Tour & Tour Guide
If you took a vacation package to Medan, you may be faced with Tour Guides: I would suggests Rp 50.000 each, for the driver and the guide ( for private tours ). This is based on the standard 3D2N tours. If you feel that you would like to show your appreciation, then really it’s up to each individual. If you are traveling on a group tour, then this should be optional.

Taxi Driver:
This is not expected. But sometimes due to the limited amount of change Indonesia such as the Rp100, Rp500 coins. You may just let them keep the change.

Airport:
Although it is clearly stated that the porter charges Rp 2.000 for each bag, many expect more of about Rp5.000 for each bag now (yes they will ask for more).
So be prepared. There was once, I was feeling generous and gave Rp20.000 for 3 bags and they still ask for more!
You will need the help of the porter if you have many luggages.

Remember, tipping in Medan Hotels, Hotels in Medan should be based on your own appreciation of service you received and your own financial ability. The amount stated here is just a general guide.
